Professor Eberly served as the Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy at the U.S. Treasury from 2011 to 2013 after being confirmed by the U.S. Senate by unanimous consent. The office was founded and first directed by Paul Volcker in 1962. In her capacity as Assistant Secretary, Dr. Eberly was the Chief Economist at the Treasury and primary economic adviser to the Secretary of the Treasury. She led the Office of Economic Policy in analysis of the U.S. and global economies and financial markets and development of policy recommendations on economic issues ranging from employment and productivity to housing and tax policy.

Professor Eberly's research focuses on finance and macroeconomics, issues brought to the fore by the global financial crisis. Her work has been published in prestigious academic journals such as the American Economic Review, the Journal of Political Economy, Econometrica, and the Quarterly Journal of Economics, and also highlighted in policy settings including the Brookings Institution and the Clinton Global Initiative. She has advised the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Congressional Budget Office on research and policy issues. She is a fellow of the National Bureau of Economic Research and was elected to the Executive Committee of the American Economic Association in 2008.

She is Academic Director of the CEO Perspectives Program (Kellogg's most senior executive education program), a joint venture between the Kellogg School of Management, Corporate Leadership Center and Chicago Booth School of Business, and Director of Kellogg's Strategic Initiative on the interface between the public and private sectors.
